Rotary Club of Westminster East is a friendly group of men and women who like to serve the community and have fun under the Rotary banner.
The Rotary Club of Westminster East was granted its charter on the 18th May 1948 with the first president being Mr Charles Penley, a leading businessman in the West End of London.
There have been many meeting venues over the years but for more than 15 years our weekly meetings on Thursday evening have been at the Charing Cross Hotel. The area covered by the club is from the City in the East through to Holborn, Oxford Street, Bond Street and Westminster down to Buckingham Palace Gate.
Currently there are 16 members of whom 1 is a lady (President 2007/2008) plus 6 honorary members. There is a distinct international flavour with members from Austria, Germany, Greece, Mauritius, Jordan, Romania, Sweden and different parts of the UK.
Occupations and subjects covered include architecture, the automobile industry, the food industry, information technology, media and advertising, digital media, international taxation, legal services, library and information services, management consulting, quantity surveying, textiles & the Salvation Army.
An important part of the club’s activities is the raising of funds and the support of charities both local and international. This year they have included the Pimlico Puffins (a swimming club for the handicapped), Kids Out Day, Westminster Children's Society, RNIB Talking Books, Vision Aid Overseas and many others.
Contact is maintained with the neighbouring Rotary Clubs of Westminster West, St. Marylebone, Chelsea, Kensington, London, St. Pancras & Paddington Rotary clubs – those within the Inner London area.
We are sponsors of the Westminster Rotaract Club and have strong involvement with their programme as we do with the Inner Wheel Club of Chelsea and Westminster who join many of our activities.
The President sets the club objectives each year on taking up the position on the 1st July. Briefly they are: the search for and development of new members, the retention of existing members, regular attendance at meetings, good fellowship and the promotion of Rotary service as an opportunity to serve the community.

Children under the age of five can develop cancer in their eyes. Sadly, few people are aware of this fact but on average one family a week will learn that their child has this devastating condition.
We are a small but national charity (reg no. 327493) that supports individuals and families affected by retinoblastoma (childhood eye cancer). Our charity is the only organisation in the UK which provides support to families affected by this condition. The charity (formerly known as the Retinoblastoma Society) was registered in 1987.

Holly Tompkins Tuller visited our club meeting on Thursday June 26th, 2008 and talked to us about her home country “New Zealand” and her experience in travel and holidays in New Zealand.
Holly said: “I was lucky enough to be invited along to speak to the Rotary Club of Westminster East last week, at their end of year handover meeting no less! I was so impressed by the club’s hospitality and welcoming nature and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening, made even nicer by the lovely venue, excellent food and great conviviality of the members.
