Rotary Club of Westminster East’s members were pleased to hear Nicola Bailey yesterday (Thursday, 19 June 2008) speaking about Sense International. Nicola has touched the club member’s hearts telling them about how this international charity organisation provides help to one of the most impossible disabilities. You can all imagine how it is to be deaf, or blind, but can you imagine how it is for a human to be deaf and blind in the same time? That’s where Sense International comes.
Sense International provides specialist education, training and support to deafblind people, their families and carers in developing countries. Deafblindness can be a severely isolating condition, and in developing countries, poverty combined with limited health care, education and social support make it even more difficult for deafblind people and their families to cope. As a result, many deafblind children and adults are institutionalised, kept in isolation or abandoned. But with basic support and education, deafblind people can and do communicate, go to school, support themselves and become valued members of their communities. Sense International makes this happen by strengthening the abilities of families, local organisations and professionals in developing countries to meet the needs of deafblind people in their communities.
